Policing Academic Centres of Excellence

In October 2025, the NPCC launched nine Policing Academic Centres of Excellence (P-ACEs) in partnership with UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
What will the P-ACEs do?
The P-ACEs will improve connections between academic researchers and policing and make it easier for policing to identify and draw upon the best research evidence, science, and technologies that the UK has to offer.
Their two key functions are to:
-
mobilise, showcase and make accessible to policing key insights, findings and outputs from their work
-
respond to the evidence needs, questions and problems raised by policing and work with policing to co-develop new research and knowledge exchange activities
Each Policing Academic Centre of Excellence will be promoted across the policing sector as an accessible source of leading academic experts aligned with Policing’s Areas of Research Interest (ARIs) and evidence needs.
The following universities have been selected to be P-ACEs:
-
P-ACE LAB - The University of Leicester, Aston University and the University of Birmingham
-
M-PACE - Manchester P-ACE, Manchester Metropolitan University with University of Manchester
How to engage with the P-ACEs
Anyone in policing can access P-ACE resources and expertise:
- General enquiries: Use the P-ACE expertise finder to identify which P-ACE has the right expertise. Click through to the P-ACE's university hosted page to learn more about what they do, see their existing research and resources, and for information on how to contact them and engage with their programme.
- See P-ACE outputs and activities: Anyone in policing can access the P-ACE Knowledge Hub site, where P-ACEs will share details of their outputs, engagements, events and impacts. This will be a site for discussion, collaboration and disseminating information.
- Regional and national activity: Forces are encouraged to consult their Research and Innovation Lead (RIL) and/or their Regional Science and Innovation Manager (RSIM) if they are interested in working with the P-ACEs at a regional or national level. RSIMs work closely with the Office of the Police Chief Scientific Adviser (OPCSA) to ensure cross-regional coordination.
